What is reflexology?

Did you know that Salon Patrice offers reflexology on hands and feet? But what is reflexology, and how can it help you?
Reflexology is a bodywork practice, similar to massage, that involves applying different amounts of pressure to certain spots on the hands, feet, or ears, based on the theory that these pressure points are connected to certain organs and body systems. Unlike massage, reflexology is localized and done only on certain spots of the body, and therefore, the patient is fully clothed.
In traditional Chinese medicine, when the body becomes stressed, its natural energy flow (qi) is blocked, which can lead to energetic imbalances and disease. Reflexologists use maps of the hands, feet, and ears to apply gentle pressure to the body's corresponding organ system to release the blocked energy and begin the healing process. While there have not been many long-term studies done on reflexology, many people, both participating in short-term studies and anecdotally, have found the practice helpful.
Participants have said that reflexology has helped with:
Reducing stress and anxiety
Pain reduction
Improvement of general well-being
Improving mood
Boosting the immune system
Fighting cancer
Healing colds, flu, bacterial infections, and sinus issues
Boosting fertility and correcting hormonal imbalances
Recovery from back problems
Aiding digestion
Easing arthritis pain
Treating nerve problems and numbness from prescriptions
Reflexology is considered to be very safe, even for those undergoing serious health challenges. It is a gentle, noninvasive practice, but you may need to consult your healthcare professional first.
If you're interested in a reflexology session, ask Patrice or Dora to book a standalone session (30 or 60-minute sessions are available), or add reflexology to your manicure, pedicure, or facial. Call Salon Patrice at (815) 223-8643 to schedule an appointment today, or see our list of services here.
