Why Should I Get a Pedicure? Benefits to Caring for Your Feet

A zebra themed pedicure

Last week, we talked about the health benefits of manicures that go beyond the aesthetic. This week, we're tackling pedicures! This service, too, is one that often gets cut from the budget when things get tight. That's definitely understandable, but today, we're bringing you some health benefits that can justify that regular spa pedicure.

-Improves Foot Health: Just like with a regular manicure improving the health of your hands and nails, regular pedicures can improve your foot and toenail health. Regularly getting your toenails trimmed and filed, calluses removed, cuticles pushed back, and your feet exfoliated and moisturized keeps your skin and toenails in good condition. This lessens the chance of developing discomfort or infections that would affect your foot health. Your pedicurist, by regularly seeing your feet, can spot anything that seems out of the ordinary such as a fungal infection or ingrown toenail.

-Improves Blood Circulation: The foot and calf massage you get during a spa pedicure helps to improve the blood circulation in your legs and feet. Better blood circulation is good for your overall health, as it helps ensure that proper amounts of oxygen and nutrients are being delivered to those areas of the body. Massages can also help with joint mobility and flexibility, leading to reduced pain in those areas.

-Improves Weight Distribution: It's not talked about much, but getting a regular pedicure can help improve your weight distribution--how the weight of your body is balanced between your feet. As your pedicurist smooths out those calluses, cuts and files your toenails, and addresses any routine foot maintenance issues, those small actions can help level out the surface of your feet, changing how you distribute your body weight and improve your balance. This can help improve your posture and lead to healthier joints, as bad posture can create wear and tear on your joints and lead to bigger problems down the road.

-Improves Mental Health: Spa pedicures are typically done in a relaxing atmosphere, with light music playing in the background as you soak your feet in warm water. Your pedicurist takes care of everything, from scrubbing your feet and removing calluses to giving you a foot massage and painting your nails. Knowing that everything is taken care of--and taking time out for self-care--reduces stress, transports you out of everyday worries, and boosts your self-esteem when you see how great your feet look.
