Why Do I Need a Manicure?

A hand with long, painted nails

Why do I need a manicure? Are there any benefits, other than cosmetic, to caring for my nails? We get it. Manicures (and pedicures) are often one of the first things to get cut out of the budget when times are tough, because we view them as frivolous and just for fun. Maybe you even feel a little guilty for spending the money on what seems like something as silly as your nails. However, there are some real reasons to stick to your nailcare routine and keep getting those manicures that go beyond the aesthetic.

-Skin health: Our hands work hard. They're washing dishes, working in the garden, cooking, cleaning, and finding other ways to collect dirt and grime. A gentle hand scrub exfoliates the dead skin cells and softens calluses, leaving you with softer skin and reduces flaking and itchiness. Spending an hour a month (or however often you go) just on your hands gives them some much-needed TLC, including exfoliation, massage, and proper hydration through masks, lotion, and cuticle oils.

-Increased blood flow: That hand massage your manicurist gives you isn't just to get the lotion and cuticle oil sink to in and help you relax, although it definitely does. It also promotes healthy blood flow to the hands (something that's especially good during winter), which can help in pain reduction. Healthy blood circulation also allows nutrients and oxygen to be delivered to the body's cells and to take away waste.

-Nail health: Nail techs are trained in how to spot nail fungus, and frequent manicures can help your manicurist become familiar with your nails' health. That way, you both can spot any infections or possible nutrient deficiencies before they become a larger problem. Getting your nails regularly trimmed, filed, and buffed keeps them flexible, strong, and decreases the chance for hangnails, as they are getting regularly moisturized and exfoliated. Cuticle care is also important, as it decreases the chance of infection by keeping the skin around the nail clean and healthy.

-Increased productivity: That may seem strange, since you're taking time out of a busy schedule to get your nails done, but research shows that your brain actually benefits from a break. As you relax and think about other things, you can come back to your day with a fresh focus.

-Decreased anxiety: You can't check your phone while your manicurist is doing your nails! Being present allows you to relax and clear your mind as you disconnect. Manicures, specifically the increased blood flow from the hand massage, also help your body release stress and tension.

-Increased confidence: It's a small thing, but don't you feel good when your nails look good? It gives you a little extra self-esteem boost because you love that glittery purple you chose. Your nail shape, polish color, art, and length get to represent exactly who you are. Additionally, practicing self-care tells your subconscious that you matter--you're investing in yourself, and you're worth the cost.
