Haircare Tips for Straight Hair

A woman with long, straight brown hair

You didn't think we'd forget those of you with straight hair, did you? Straight hair needs love too, just like curly and wavy hair. (Want haircare tips for curly hair? Find it here. Wavies, check this out.) Read on to get the most out of your straight hair and make sure it's beautiful, shiny, and soft. Here are our haircare tips for straight hair:

-Shampoo regularly: Unfortunately for those with straight hair, it's more susceptible to dirt, oil, sweat, and grease, so your hair probably needs to be washed a little more frequently, depending on whether your scalp leans more dry or oily. Wash with a sulfate-free shampoo so as not to dry your hair out further from more frequent washings, and use a dry shampoo in between wash days. Use a clarifying shampoo regularly (start with twice a month and incorporate it more often if needed) to remove product buildup.

-Be careful with conditioner: Those with wavy or curly hair need an extra boost of moisture from conditioner and masks. Straight hair usually doesn't have a problem getting moisture from the scalp to the ends, so focus on putting conditioner on your ends and work your way up, but don't put anything on your roots or scalp. Some formulas will leave your hair feeling weighed down if there's too much conditioner. Aim for a lightweight formula. (Need a scalp reset? Try a scalp facial!)

-Adding volume: Straight hair can often go limp and feel lifeless, so creating some volume is important. Try a dry texturizing spray so that it doesn't create any weight at the root. Then, blow dry your hair upward at the root, starting with heat and finishing with a blast of cool air to minimize damage and breakage. (Always protect your hair by using a heat protectant product before using hot tools of any kind.)

-Fight frizz: Our friends with curly and wavy hair fight this battle, too. If you're feeling extra frizzy from humidity, use a bristle brush to comb some dry oil through it while it's still wet. The oil will act as a barrier to keep the liquid in the air from penetrating your hair. (Speaking of brushes--a paddle brush is your best friend. The wide surface makes it great for straight hair, but if you have fine, tangly hair, use a wide-tooth comb in the shower to get those knots out.) Make sure to get your hair trimmed every 4-8 weeks to minimize split ends, breakage, and damage.
