Caring for Wavy Hair

Last week, we talked about how to get healthy curls. This week is all about the waves, because caring for wavy and curly hair isn't quite the same thing. While there are some similarities, we'll break down the basic differences to help you get the most out of your waves. Much of finding a wavy hair routine is about experimentation--you'll find what your hair likes and get rocking waves in no time.
-Moisture: Like curly hair, wavy hair needs extra moisture, although not always to the extent that curly hair does. Since waves aren't as tight as curls, moisture is able to travel more easily from the root down the shaft of the hair, though not as easily as with straight hair. Adding a little light hair oil to your ends before bed and putting on a moisturizing or protein-rich hair mask once or twice a week (or less, depending on your hair type) should do the trick.
-Washing: This, too, is where wavy hair differs from curly hair. While curly hair can often go a week or more without washing, wavy hair can sometimes (again, this depends on your hair type) benefit from a wash twice a week or more frequently. Clarifying shampoos once a month or so will help remove any product buildup (and help to combat frizz). Co-wash works for some wavies; otherwise, focus on sulfate-free shampoos, just like curlies, and don't skimp on the conditioner. Squishing the conditioner into your hair, or using praying hands can make sure that all your strands are evenly coated. You may want to rinse a little of it out (but not all the way) to keep your locks hydrated.
-Less is more: This is where it gets a little trickier. The type of styling product (gel, mousse, cream, spray) varies from person to person, but overall, most wavies say that less product is better because it doesn't weigh down their hair. Find a list of recommended products here.
-Don't be afraid to detangle: Like curly hair, wavy hair needs trimming regularly in order to maintain the curl pattern and not get weighed down. Wavy hair also has more of a tendency to get tangly. This also depends on the type of wave-enhancing product you use, as well as how fine your hair is. If your hair does get tangly in between washes, spray a little detangler or put some of your leave-in conditioner on the knot. Then, use your fingers, a comb, or a special detangling brush (like a Wet Brush), and work from the bottom up to detangle just the knot. Don't brush through your whole head if you don't need to: you don't want to comb out your waves.
-Heat style safely: Just like with curly hair, spray a heat protector on your hair before using any hot tools so you don't damage your hair.
-Layers are key: Often, wavies like layers because it showcases their natural texture the best and takes the excess weight off. Ask your hairstylist for a layered look that will suit your face, but also help enhance your waves.
