Fall Makeup Trends

A woman with long brown hair, red lipstick, and matching red nails

Fall is almost here! While we're excited for cozy knit layers and warm lattes, we're also looking forward to switching up our makeup routines a little bit. (See our fall nail trends here.) What's trending for fall? This season seems to be welcoming a mix of the clean-girl aesthetic and seeing a resurgence of grunge. Read on for more fall makeup trends to try out this season.

  1. Tightlined eyes: This is not a new technique by any means, but as a way to define the eyes and lashes rather than the smoky grunge look from earlier days. Lines are crisp and sharp, and sometimes the bottom lash line is left completely bare. The first tip is to make sure you have an eyeliner that is suitable for lining the waterline. After you apply the liner to your top and bottom waterline, don't blink if you want to keep the lines crisp. (Aiming for a grunge look? Squeeze your eyes shut.) Wiggle the point of your liner in between your eyelashes for a more defined look.

  2. Gray eyeshadow: Gray and gunmetal shadows are trending! These cool tones can help create that natural "no makeup-makeup" effect if you sweep a little light gray in your crease. If you want a more rock-n-roll look, add a deep gunmetal gray to the outer corners, but the possibilities are endless!

  3. Spiky lashes: While spiky lashes can give '70s vibes, they don't have to. Add lots of liner for a goth effect, or add some gold eyeshadow and a red lip to turn the look glam. False lashes will give your look added drama, while creating spiky clumps with mascara will give you a more subtle, toned-down version of the trend.

  4. Natural brows: Fuller, softer brows are finally making a comeback! Simply fill in your brows with a little bit of pencil or powder, set with a clear brow gel, and you're good to go.

  5. Dark red lips: Just like with nails this season, dark red is trending. Whether you go matte or glossy is up to you; glossy red lips give an updated version of the '90s trend. Try pairing the bold red lip with a pared-back makeup routine that focuses on beautiful, glowy skin.

  6. Skin first: Skincare first isn't going anywhere this fall. "Skin silking" is leading the charge, where people put up to 12 toners on their face to flood it with moisture. You don't need to do that--all you need is a good milky toner (two layers will do the trick for most people; if you have dry skin, add a moisturizer on top). Let that sink in for a while and then do your makeup. (See our facial and skincare services here.)

  7. Smudged, smoky liner: We know--crisp, tightlined eyes are trending, too. But grunge makeup trends aren't complete without a smoky, grungy eye. Instead of using black, play with another deep liner color (brown, emerald green, burgundy, or navy blue) for a touch of unexpected elegance.

And there you have it! These trends are fun to play around with, but if you'd like a makeup consultation, call Salon Patrice at (815) 223-8643 or find our makeup services here.
