Benefits of a Milk Bath Pedicure

A bottle of Glenna's CBD Foaming Milk Bath & a bottle of Restorative Massage & Body Oil

We know there are tons of nutrients in milk, but have you ever thought about tapping into them for your skin? Milk baths have actually been used since ancient times to boost the health and appearance of the skin.

So why think about milk? According to the Cleveland Clinic, the average consumer spends approximately $1,000 on skincare and beauty products per year. Many consumers are also searching for transparency in ingredients, suffer from sensitivity, or are looking for more sustainability with their skincare and beauty products. So why not start thinking about a simpler skincare routine? Cleopatra, for example, was known for bathing in goat's milk.

How can a milk bath addition to your pedicure help your skin? Glad you asked! Read on to see how the benefits of milk baths might be a welcome addition to your skincare (and pedicure) routine:

  1. Exfoliation: While pedicures often include some form of exfoliation, the lactic acid in milk is an exfoliator on its own. Lactic acid is a type of Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), and you may have purchased a "skin peeler" for your face with AHA in it. Starting your pedicure by relaxing with your feet in a milk bath helps get the exfoliation process going without hard scrubbing. The AHA will promote cell turnover by removing the dead skin cells, leaving your skin soft and silky.

  2. Moisturizing: The outer layer of the skin includes proteins that hold on to oil and water. When you dunk your feel in a milk bath, the skin absorbs the milk fats, which provide the skin with an extra boost of hydration. The extra moisture can also help ease skin conditions such as sunburn, atopic dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis.

  3. Anti-inflammatory: Milk is high in calcium, vitamin D, and zinc, which are great anti-inflammatory nutrients. These ingredients also work toward helping to ease the skin conditions listed above.

  4. Itch relief: Milk is soothing, and that combined with its anti-inflammatory properties can help offer relief from skin irritation and itchiness, such as poison ivy and other rash-inducing plants. It also helps with washing the toxic oil off. (Please note: This is not a substitute for seeing your doctor and/or getting prescription medications to treat poison ivy or other similar conditions.)

  5. Brightening and smoothing: With regular milk bath treatments, the combination of gentle exfoliation and hydration can brighten the skin and keep your feet soft and smooth.
