Beauty Benefits of Pumpkin

Hello, pumpkin! It's officially October, and Salon Patrice is embracing pumpkin season by offering a new pumpkin facial peel (find our facial information here)! We thought we'd also take the time to dig into the many beauty benefits of pumpkin for your hair, skin, and nails.
Skincare:
Antioxidants: Pumpkin is rich in antioxidants like Vitamin C, which help to fight against free radicals like UV rays and environmental pollution, which can cause signs of aging. Not only is a pumpkin facial especially indulgent in the fall, but it's also the perfect ingredient to help heal your skin from any summer sun damage since Vitamin C helps to fade dark spots.
Exfoliation: The enzymes in pumpkin naturally exfoliate the skin by breaking down dead skin cells to help your skin look brighter and smoother. This gentle exfoliation is great for those with sensitive skin, as it shouldn't be irritating.
Anti-aging: In addition to pumpkin's antioxidants, this great gourd also contains alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), which promote collagen production and cell turnover. This reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a more youthful, glowing complexion. Beta carotene and Vitamin A also help to provide anti-aging support.
Hydration: Pumpkin is packed with Vitamin E and essential fatty acids, which can help strengthen the skin barrier and lock in hydration. This extra hydration is essential as we head into cooler, drier weather.
How can you incorporate pumpkin into your routine? We recommend our pumpkin peel for gentle exfoliation, but you can also find over-the-counter pumpkin masks, serums, and creams, depending on your skin's need.
Hair care:
Blocks DHT: Pumpkin's phytosterols and fatty acids help inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to hair loss.
Hydration: Pumpkin seed oil is rich in omega fatty acids, which seals moisture into the hair cuticle, reduces frizz, and softens dry, brittle hair.
Scalp health: Zinc and Vitamin E help balance oil production, soothe irritation, and fight flakiness and dandruff.
Strengthens: Pumpkin's minerals and antioxidants protect hair follicles from oxidative stress and environmental damage, minimizing breakage.
Add pumpkin or pumpkin seed oil to your hair care routine by warming pumpkin seed oil and massaging it directly into your scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes (or overnight) and rinse out. You can also add pumpkin puree to other moisturizing ingredients like coconut oil and honey for a deep conditioning treatment. Mix the ingredients together, warm them if you prefer, and leave on for 20-30 minutes. There are plenty of pumpkin seed oil options available in stores. Of course, adding pumpkin or pumpkin seeds to your diet allows you to get the nutrients from the inside out!
Nail care:
Exfoliation: Like in skincare, pumpkin's ability to gently exfoliate can break down the dead skin cells around the nail bed and even heels without harsh scrubbing.
Hydration: Vitamins A, C, and E help restore moisture to and nourish dry cuticles, hands, and feet.
Skin health: The zinc and antioxidants found in pumpkin and pumpkin seed oil help calm irritation and support the overall health of the skin surrounding your nails.
Stronger growth: Pumpkin seeds provide essential biotin, zinc, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids that strengthen nail structure from the inside out.
Grab a pumpkin cuticle cream or oil, hand scrub, or lotion to add pumpkin to your nail care routine.
It's hard not to love pumpkin's beauty benefits when you see them listed out! We hope you add some to your hair, skin, or nail routine, and enjoy a pumpkin peel at the salon this fall. Call (815) 223-8643 to schedule an appointment.
