In honor of National Coffee Day on September 30, we're diving into the beauty benefits of caffeine. It's found in all kinds of beauty products, but what is it actually doing for you?

Read on for the beauty benefits of caffeine!

Skincare:

  • Protection from free radical damage: Coffee contains antioxidants that fight damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals from UV rays and toxins in the air break down your collagen and cause fine lines, wrinkles, and saggy skin, among other things.

  • Reduces undereye bags: Whether you've got a hangover or just didn't get enough sleep, caffeine can help tighten the skin under the eyes and reduce the appearance of undereye bags. Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, which means that it constricts the blood vessels. That reduces blood flow to the skin and makes your undereyes look brighter!

  • Reduces inflammation and swelling: Caffeine's anti-inflammatory properties may help soothe inflammation, and as a result, can reduce swelling and redness.

  • Improves the appearance of cellulite: Caffeine has been shown to stimulate enzymes that break down fats, and temporarily dehydrating the surrounding tissue. As a result, the skin looks firmer and smoother, although it's a temporary fix.

  • Helps exfoliate the skin: Coffee scrubs are a great way to exfoliate the skin and reap the benefits of caffeine, making your skin smoother and brighter. While scrubs are generally too harsh for the face, they're great for use on the body 1-2 times per week.

Most caffeine products are best applied in the morning for maximum benefits, as the effects tend to wear off later in the day.

Haircare:

  • Stimulates hair growth: Topical caffeine has been shown to help stimulate the hair follicle at the root, supporting reduced hair shedding, improved hair density, stronger roots, and a reduced appearance of hair thinning.

  • Boosts blood flow: A caffeine scalp scrub improves microcirculation, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to hair roots, which helps with hair growth.

  • Adds volume and shine: Caffeine helps to remove buildup, smooth the hair cuticle, and give fine hair a fuller appearance.

  • Prolongs hair growth: Studies show caffeine can counteract testosterone and DHT (dihydrotestosterone) processes, keeping hair strands in their active growth (anagen) phase longer.

While caffeine is best used as a supplement for thinning hair rather than a full solution, use it in shampoos, scalp scrubs, scalp treatments, oils, and conditioners.

Nail care:

  • Circulation support: Adding topical caffeine products directly to the nail may encourage blood flow, possibly helping deliver nutrients to the nail matrix where nail growth originates.

  • Antioxidant properties: Caffeine has natural antioxidant properties that could protect the skin around the nail bed from free radical damage and environmental stress.

  • Mild fungal disruption: Studies show that caffeine can target fungal cell structures, and may be a helpful tool to fight mild fungal infections.

Want to add caffeine to your nail care routine? Look for caffeine-infused polishes, cuticle oils, hand or foot masks, and soaks.
