April 4 is Vitamin C Day, and while we often think of Vitamin C for immune health, it also offers many benefits for the hair, skin, and nails. (Find a post about antioxidants in skincare here.)
Vitamin C benefits for the skin:
Brightens and evens the skin tone: Vitamin C can inhibit melanin production, helping to fade brown spots and hyperpigmentation. It also brightens the skin tone, great for transitioning to spring and summer skincare.
Boosts collagen production: Vitamin C stimulates collagen synthesis, promoting firmer skin, improving elasticity, and reducing fine lines
Antioxidant protection: Since Vitamin C is an antioxidant, it helps to combat free radicals caused by sun exposure and environmental pollutants. This antioxidant protects against premature aging
Wound healing and inflammation reduction: Using Vitamin C can help heal acne scarring and reduce inflammation
Sunscreen boost: While Vitamin C isn't a substitute for sunscreen, it does help defend against sun damage
Good to know: Apply topical Vitamin C (a serum or lotion) in the morning to help protect your skin from the sun. It pairs well with sunscreen, of course, but can also boost the moisturizing benefits of hyaluronic acid. Don't mix it with other AHAs/BHAs to prevent irritation, and start by using it every other day if your skin isn't used to it.
Vitamin C benefits for the hair:
Encourages hair growth: Because Vitamin C boosts collagen production, it helps to strengthen scalp tissue and support hair follicles. It also aids in iron absorption, which helps stop shedding and prevents brittle hair
Shinier hair: Vitamin C smooths the hair for increased shine
UV protection: Just like with the skin, Vitamin C offers the same protection for the hair
Scalp health: Vitamin C's antioxidant properties neutralize free radicals. It also helps to manage dandruff and itchy scalp
Damage repair: Vitamin C can help repair dry, brittle hair and aid against environmental damage
Good to know: Vitamin C's benefits for the hair can be reaped in a few ways: by consuming foods naturally rich in the nutrient (citrus, berries, spinach, and broccoli), in supplement form, or through topical treatment. If you choose a topical treatment, look for hair serums, oils, and shampoos and conditioners containing Vitamin C. If you have sensitive skin, patch test the product first to make sure your scalp and hair don't react. You can also apply the product mid-length through your hair to the ends, avoiding the scalp entirely.
Vitamin C benefits for the nails:
Strengthening: Thanks to Vitamin C's collagen booster properties, it's a great way to naturally strengthen and harden the nails. Collagen is the protein responsible for the structure, strength, and integrity of the fingernails. Vitamin C deficiency can lead to weak, brittle nails that are prone to breaking or splitting.
Healthy growth: A strong nail leads to healthy nail beds, in turn producing strong, resilient nail cells that grow more quickly. Vitamin C also helps to combat brittleness.
Brightener: Like how Vitamin C can help even out skin tone, Vitamin C can also work to brighten yellow or stained nails
Pair it: Vitamin C and Vitamin E work well together to nourish, protect, and improve cuticle elasticity
Good to know: To benefit the nails, you can eat foods rich in Vitamin C (citrus, berries, spinach, and broccoli), take a supplement, or apply it topically. Look for Vitamin C-infused cuticle oils, moisturizers, and nail strengtheners to help repair damage and keep nails strong and healthy.
