Your Guide to Glowing Fall Skin

Fall can present a whole host of challenges for the skin as the air gets cooler and drier. Not to worry, though--you can still get glowing fall skin as we transition from summer to the new season. Read on for our guide to glowing fall skin:
Summer to Fall: What's Happening?
The weather cools down, there's less humidity in the air, and indoor heating can dry your skin out further. Your skin may start feeling tight and dehydrated. Because of the weather change, your skin may produce les oil than it did in the summer, triggering skin issues like acne, rosacea, and others, so you may need to tweak your skincare routine a bit during the fall season.
Common Fall Skin Problems
Acne: Dry air + indoor heating = blocked pores and breakouts. Because of holidays, back-to-school routines, and other things, people tend to be more stressed out in the fall, which can also lead to breakouts. If you find your skin is more prone to breakouts in the fall, use a gentle cleanser and spot treat with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide (or acne patches). Clay masks can also be extremely helpful (Salon Patrice offers several facials to assist with healing acne). Find more information about acne skincare here. Dietary changes, such as adding antioxidants and eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acid can reduce inflammation and promote healthier skin, but you should talk to your doctor first.
Eczema: Eczema symptoms may become more severe during the fall due to the cooler air, less humidity, and indoor heating. Use unscented and hypoallergenic moisturizers and try to identify any triggers to prevent further flare-ups.
Psorasis and Scalp Psoriasis: The lack of sunlight and dry conditions can trigger flare-ups, and the dry air can worsen itchiness for those with scalp psoriasis. Regular moisturizing, stress management, and dietary supplements like omega-3 fatty acids can help.
Rosacea: Fall's fluctuating temperatures can trigger rosacea flare-ups. Use gentle, hydrating products and avoid triggers like spicy foods, hot drinks, and excessive sunlight.
Contact Dermatitis: Fall can sometimes result in contact dermatitis for those with sensitive skin, so watch for products like wool and nickel in your clothes and skincare products.
What Can I Do?
To support your skin as best you can, here are our tips for healthy skin all season long.
Moisturize: You may need to switch from a lighter moisturizer to something richer for the fall, particularly at night. If you're using a cleanser that is foaming or stripping, try a creamy, hydrating formula if you think your skin may need the extra boost. Look for ingredients like cermanides, hyaluronic acid, or glycerin.
Add your actives: Now's the time to add your chemical exfoliants back into your routine (lactic or glycolic acids) and retinoids to clear dullness and dark spots. Learn more about the importance of exfoliation here.
Keep up the SPF: Your skin still needs sun protection, even though there's less daylight! Use your sunscreen daily and layer it with richer lotions if needed.
Hydrate: We say this all the time, but drink your water! Your skin is a product of what you put inside, which means hydration is important, as is a healthy diet.
Add extra moisture: If you need it, add a humidifier to your room to counteract the effects of indoor heating.
Sample Fall Skincare Routine:
Consistency is key, so here's a sample skincare routine to help you transition from summer to fall and get glowing skin all year long. Salon Patrice is happy to help find the best products for your skin, and we offer a number of facial services to address any skin concerns you may have.
Morning routine:
Cleanse: Swap a gentle, moisturizing cleanser for any harsh, foaming cleansers.
Serum: Use an antioxidant serum, like vitamin C, to add brightness and protect your skin against environmental damage. (Learn more about antioxidants here.)
Moisturizer: Look for a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides to lock in water.
SPF: Use SPF of 30 or higher, and read more about the different types here to see which is best for you.
Evening routine:
Double cleanse: Melt away your SPF, makeup, and any sweat, dirt, or pollution with a balm or oil-based cleanser first. Follow up with your daily cleanser.
Exfoliate or mask: Exfoliate two to three times per week to get rid of dead skin cells and keep the skin looking bright. Use chemical exfoliants rather than scrubs to reduce redness. On off nights, add gentle moisturizing, clay, or sheet masks if you feel your skin needs the extra treatment. Add a lip scrub too if your lips feel chapped. (Read about lip care routines here.)
Serums and treatments: Reintroduce retinoids slowly and pair them with extra hyrdation to avoid flakiness.
Moisturize: Add a rich night cream that will protect your skin barrier, and make sure to add a hydrating lip balm or lip sleeping mask to repair your lips overnight.
Fall is also a great time to get a facial as the seasons change. Repair any summer damage, deeply exfoliate, and prep the skin barrier for harsher weather with a deep hydrating treatment. See Salon Patrice's list of facials here or call (815) 223-8643 for more information.
