Too Much Turkey? Here's How to Help Your Skin Bounce Back

A woman looking at herself in the mirror

If you, like many Americans, enjoyed all the delicious Thanksgiving food you could get your hands on, but see your skin is screaming in protest, we've got you covered. Here's our guide to helping your skin bounce back after too much turkey (or pumpkin pie!), so you can get back to your Black Friday and Small Business Saturday shopping in style:

  1. Hydrate: We know--a lot of our posts begin this way, but don't underestimate the importance of drinking water. After that giant Thanksgiving dinner, any alcohol, and the after-dinner sweets, your body could use the extra water to flush those toxins out. Extra water also help maintain your skin's moisture. Depending on how much alcohol and salt you've consumed, you may need more than your eight glasses a day.

  2. Eat a balanced diet: Get your nutrients in to balance out all those carbs! Eat plenty of vegetables, protein, and up your antioxidants with green tea, blueberries, and leafy greens. Potassium-rich foods can help balance out your sodium levels, so add a banana to your morning smoothie. Omega-3s are great for the skin, so walnuts and salmon are good choices.

  3. Treat any breakouts: Too much sugar, particularly for those with sensitive skin, can cause breakouts. Sugar disrupts the hormone levels, accelerates aging, and damages the collagen proteins, so if you've found yourself with some acne the day after your big party, reach for your acne treatment with tea tree or salicylic acid (check out this one by Karin Herzog), or pop on an acne patch overnight.

  4. Aid your undereye area: Sugar, alcohol, and sodium-laden foods can cause puffiness. There are plenty of tricks you can use at home to help decrease puffiness under the eyes: use a cool compress, put some undereye masks in the fridge for a few minutes and wear them for 15-20 minutes, and use undereye products with caffeine.

  5. Take down a puffy face: Is your face puffy, too? You can use a cold compress on your face (or pop a sheet mask in the fridge before you put it on), just like with your eyes. Try massaging your face with a chilled facial roller and getting some gentle exercise to get your lymphatic system flowing.

  6. Consider a facial treatment: Salon Patrice offers a variety of facials and add-on treatments to help your skin detox and glow! (Find our facials here.)
