Makeup Myths: Busted

A mother putting makeup on her teenage daughter

In recent weeks, we've gotten into nail myths, hair myths, and skincare myths. The time has come to tackle those pesky makeup myths, too! Read on to find our top makeup myths busted and start having fun with makeup again!

  1. Only expensive makeup is good: Just like with skincare, this is definitely not the case anymore (if it ever was). There's a common misconception that high price = high quality, but there are amazing drugstore brands out there that can help you get the look and coverage you want without breaking the bank. Many have a focus on good ingredients, too--so if you're ingredient-focused, do your research and see which brands are best.

  2. Wearing makeup every day damages your skin: Another myth--although this does have a bit of a caveat. You have to follow a proper skincare routine, making sure that you're taking all of your makeup off at night and moisturizing your skin. If you're doing that, you're giving your skin the nutrients it needs to be healthy. (Need a skincare routine? See this post to find a good one for your skin type.)

  3. I can't wear red lipstick: Yes, you can! While not every red lipstick looks good on every person, there is a perfect red out there for you, we promise. The key is to know your undertone (find more info on that here) and choose your lipstick based on that. People with cool undertones will find that a blue-based red lipstick looks best on them, while those with warm undertones should look for an orange-based red.

  4. I don't need makeup primer or setting spray: This is partially true--you may not always need primer or setting spray, but primer does serve a few specific purposes. First, if you have oily or combination skin, there are some great primers out there that help control shine from excess oil and will keep your makeup from breaking down. Primers prep your skin for makeup, help your makeup last longer, even out your skin, and fill in pores and fine lines. If you have redness or dark spots, certain primers can also assist to cancel them out or blur them. Setting spray helps makeup last longer, too, but it does more than that. Setting spray melts all of your makeup together and blends it into one cohesive look, making it look more skin-like. You may not need both every day, but they can be mutually beneficial if you're heading to a wedding, party, or big event where you need your makeup to last all day.

  5. Bottom eyeliner makes my eyes look better: Well...maybe. This often depends on the look you're going for. However, some eyeliners, like liquid liner, are way too harsh for the lower lash line, especially in black. In general, bottom eyeliner closes the eye off and makes it look smaller. It can enhance imperfections and dark circles, too, so make sure you highlight that inner corner, and add a pop of champagne-colored liner or shadow to make your eyes look bright and awake. If you want color on your lower lash line, try a gentle pencil or some eyeshadow you used in your look and only take the liner halfway. This will help your eyes look bigger but keep them defined.

  6. I can't wear shimmer eyeshadow after 40: Yes, you can! While it's true that shimmer eyeshadow can fall into fine lines and exaggerate them, all-matte eye looks can also emphasize age. Your best bet is to sweep a little shimmer eyeshadow over the middle of your lid to make your eyes look bigger and brighter, and save the mattes for definition in the outer corner.
